My experience is that if someone is willing to save you, most likely, it’s because they are looking to be saved, too. How many of us bought into the fairy tale that the prince in shining armor or the beautiful princess would save us from ourselves and the horrors of life? ME!

We all buy into fairy tales, to a certain degree, because of centuries of being fed the messaging of what romantic love promises us—permission to avoid self-responsibility by allowing someone to protect you while demonstrating how much they love you. Endlessly. Because if they really love you, they will know how to, and be willing to, rescue you from all the pain of life. What’s crazy is that the beginning of most relationships feels so good that this false idea is validated as attainable.
